As I sit here and prepare for the last stop of the 2024 season on Lake Murray in South Carolina, I can’t help but do some self-reflecting on the past two years and feel a surge of pride. Not just for my own journey, but for the incredible strides the U.S. Army Outdoors Team has made. Taking over the team in the spring of 2022, I had a vision over a decade ago, a vision that has now come to fruition. Our mission has always been to market the Army as the premier service of choice, and we’ve done so through our shared love and passion for the great outdoors.
I am immensely grateful to the National Professional Fishing League for giving both myself and my teammate, John Branch, a platform. This opportunity has allowed us to showcase our talent and skills, but more importantly, it has allowed us to highlight the opportunities the Army has to offer. It’s a chance to break down stereotypes and show that being a soldier doesn’t mean sacrificing your personal life or passions every day of service. In fact, the Army encourages all soldiers of all ranks to pursue their personal goals and dreams.
Breaking Stereotypes
The stigma that Soldiers don’t have a life outside the uniform is one of the biggest misconceptions we face. People often think we’re constantly deployed, or that we only make enough to scrape by while getting yelled at all the time. It’s just not true.
Our involvement in the outdoors and professional fishing proves that soldiers can and do lead fulfilling lives beyond their military duties. Whether it’s fishing, hiking, or any other passion, the Army supports and encourages us to pursue our interests. This balance is crucial, not just for personal satisfaction, but for overall well-being.
Discipline: The Backbone of Success
One of the most significant ways the Army has shaped me as both a soldier and an angler is through discipline. The rigorous training and demands of military life instill a level of discipline that is unparalleled. This discipline translates seamlessly to fishing. Early mornings, meticulous preparation, and unwavering focus are all part of the job. It’s this discipline that helps me remain patient and persistent, even when the fish aren’t biting.
Leadership Skills: Guiding the Team
Leadership is another cornerstone of military life that has profoundly influenced my approach to fishing and team management. Leading the U.S. Army Outdoors Team requires not just tactical expertise, but the ability to inspire and motivate. The leadership skills I’ve honed in the Army enable me to guide my team effectively, ensuring we operate as a cohesive unit. This leadership extends beyond competition; it’s about mentoring younger soldiers and anglers, helping them navigate their own paths.
Strong Work Ethic: The Fuel for Achievement
A strong work ethic is ingrained in every soldier. The Army teaches us to push beyond our limits, to strive for excellence in all we do. This work ethic is essential in professional fishing, where success often hinges on dedication and hard work. Countless hours spent practicing, studying fish patterns, and perfecting techniques are what set us apart. It’s this relentless drive that fuels our achievements on the water.
Stability: A Steady Foundation
Stability is another crucial aspect the Army provides. Knowing I have a secure and stable career allows me to focus on my passions without undue worry. This stability translates to a more focused and relaxed approach to fishing. It’s easier to take calculated risks and embrace new opportunities when you have a solid foundation to fall back on. The Army’s support system ensures that, even in the face of challenges, we have the resources and backing to overcome them.
Sense of Pride and Family
Lastly, there’s a profound sense of pride and family that comes with being part of the Army and the U.S. Army Outdoors Team. The camaraderie and bonds formed with fellow Soldiers and teammates are unparalleled. This sense of belonging fuels our passion and drives us to succeed. It’s not just about individual accomplishments; it’s about representing something greater than ourselves. The pride we take in our service and our team is what propels us forward, both on and off the water.
Looking Ahead
As I look back on the 2024 season, I’m filled with gratitude for the journey and the growth we’ve experienced. The U.S. Army Outdoors Team has not only met but exceeded the vision I had when I took over in 2022. We’ve shattered stereotypes, showcased our skills, and highlighted the incredible opportunities the Army offers.
Moving forward, I’m excited for what lies ahead. The future holds endless possibilities, and I’m confident that with the discipline, leadership, work ethic, stability, and sense of pride instilled by the Army, we will continue to achieve great things. The 2024 season may be coming to an end, but our journey is far from over. Together, we will keep pushing boundaries, breaking barriers, and showing the world what it truly means to be part of the U.S. Army Outdoors Team.
