Ignore the Noise and Trust What Works

NPFL Pro Adam Savage talks about keeping the focus on what got you here.

If you’ve spent more than five minutes around fishing content lately, you’ve probably been told that the next big game changer will instantly make you a better angler. Apparently, all your problems can be solved by a new lure, a new color, or electronics that practically ask the fish if they’re hungry. And yet somehow, the fish still manage to ignore us.

The truth is that fishing hasn’t changed nearly as much as the marketing has. Fish still eat, hide, move with the seasons, and occasionally laugh at us underwater. While the industry pushes constant innovation, the basics keep quietly putting fish in the boat, usually with baits that look suspiciously similar to the ones grandpa used.

One of the biggest mistakes anglers make is constantly chasing what’s new instead of trusting what works. We’ve all done it. You start the day with a confidence bait tied on, catch a fish or two, then scroll social media at lunch and convince yourself you’re doing it all wrong. Suddenly, you’re retying every ten casts, your deck looks like a yard sale, and you’ve spent more time changing lures than actually fishing.

Confidence baits matter because confidence changes how you fish. When you trust a lure, you slow down, make better casts, and fish it where fish actually live not just where it’s easy to throw. Whether it’s a jig, a Texas-rig, a spinnerbait, or that beat-up crankbait with teeth marks from three seasons ago, confidence baits get more time in the strike zone. And that’s something no “limited edition” color can replace.

Fishing the basics also helps clear your head. Fishing is supposed to be an escape, but it’s hard to relax when you’re mentally arguing with every YouTube angler you’ve ever watched. When you strip things down and focus on simple techniques, you start paying attention to what really matters: water depth, wind, cover, and those subtle bites that feel like nothing … until they’re not.

There’s also something comforting about repetition. The more you fish a technique, the more instinct takes over. You don’t overthink every retrieve or panic when the bite slows down. Confident anglers don’t scramble; they adjust. They trust the process, even when the fish are stubborn.

At the end of the day, the biggest game changer isn’t the newest bait—it’s belief: belief in your skills, your decisions, and the lures that have already proven themselves. Fishing the basics may not be flashy, but it works. And while everyone else is chasing the next miracle lure, you’ll be quietly catching fish … probably with something that’s been in your fishing lineup longer than your favorite hat.
